Australian Couple’s Journey After Expanded Genetic Carrier Screening Reveals OCA1 Risk

While expecting their first child, Georgina Trousas, 40, and Adam Lagus, 39, from Sydney chose an expanded carrier screen that tests for roughly 800 genetic conditions. The couple was initially reassured by a 2 percent estimate that both would carry the same disorder. A week after their gender reveal, Georgina received a call from her obstetrician informing her that both she and Adam were carriers of genes linked to oculocutaneous albinism type 1 (OCA1), a rare condition affecting melanin production. Their unborn daughter therefore faced a 25 percent chance of inheriting both variants and being affected.

To determine whether the fetus had inherited the condition, the couple elected to undergo amniocentesis, a prenatal test that extracts fetal DNA from amniotic fluid. Although the procedure carries a small miscarriage risk, Georgina weighed the anxiety of uncertainty against the potential benefit of early knowledge. The amniocentesis confirmed that their daughter had inherited both OCA1-associated variants.

They also connected with the National Organization for Albinism and Hypopigmentation, the Albinism Fellowship of Australia, and Vision Australia. Through these networks they learned that OCA1 manifests variably, often requiring lifelong eye care, sun protection, and vision support. Practical steps included installing UV-protective window shades and arranging specialist medical appointments.
