Windows 11 Gets Streamlined Search Experience in Insider Build

Microsoft has overhauled the built-in Windows 11 Search window in the latest Windows Insider build. The new layout removes trending searches, promotional hooks and AI-tool banners, presenting instead a sparse list of suggested items identified by name and category (app or setting). Recent searches appear for quick return, and typo tolerance allows queries such as “utlook” to resolve to “Outlook.” Even two-character inputs like “zo” surface relevant results such as the Magnifier tool’s zoom settings. Local results retain priority, while users can toggle inclusion of web and Microsoft Store suggestions in Settings -> Privacy and Security -> Search.
Enabling the Feature
To test the redesign, users must run a Windows 11 Insider build with the channel set to Experimental. The feature may not appear by default; the “Refined Windows Search” flag must be enabled under Settings -> Windows Update -> Windows Insider Program -> Feature flags. Once activated, the updated Search window replaces the legacy version.
Microsoft’s Position
In a Monday blog post, Microsoft explained the motivation behind the change:

The company added that the focus was on making results “more dependable, easier to scan, and clearer before you click.”
