Neon Sets Nov. 25 Theatrical Release for Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s “All of a Sudden”

Neon announced that “All of a Sudden,” the latest film by writer-director Ryusuke Hamaguchi, will open in U.S. theaters on Nov. 25, 2026. The studio confirmed an awards-campaign rollout to accompany the release.

The Japanese-French drama premiered in competition at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where it received an 11-minute standing ovation and earned the Best Actress prize for both leads, Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto. The film’s narrative follows Marie-Lou, director of an elderly-care facility, and Mari, a Japanese theater director confronting cancer, as they pursue a philosophy of listening-based care.

“All of a Sudden” is adapted loosely from *When Life Suddenly Takes a Turn: Twenty Letters Between a Philosopher With Terminal Cancer and a Medical Anthropologist* by Makiko Miyano and Maho Isono. Hamaguchi co-wrote the screenplay with Léa Le Dimna. Production partners include David Gauquié, Julien Deris, Jean-Luc Ormières, Renan Artukmaç (Cinefrance Studios, France); Hiroko Matsuda, Kosuke Oshida, Yuji Sadai (Office Shirous and Bitters End, Japan); Bettina Brokemper (Heimatfilm, Germany); and Joseph Rouschop (Tarantula, Belgium).

The release joins a crowded 2026 Neon lineup that also features Luca Guadagnino’s “Artificial,” twin directors Arie and Chuko’s “Clarissa,” Cristian Mungiu’s Palme d’Or winner “Fjord,” James Gray’s “Paper Tiger,” Na Hong-Jin’s “Hope,” and the documentary “Once Upon a Time in Harlem.” Neon, which amassed 57 Academy Award nominations over nine years, is leveraging the film’s Cannes momentum to bolster its awards season presence.
