History

Historical Context

India became a WTO member on 1 January 1995 after the 1991 liberalisation that cut tariffs and opened its markets. Since then trade has surged to $1.63 trillion in 2024, and the 2026 India-EU free-trade agreement, slated for early 2027, will eliminate duties on more than 90 % of goods across sectors, extending the WTO-era reforms.
