Wang Huning’s Pyongyang Visit Reinforces China-North Korea Ties

On July 15-16, 2026, Wang Huning, a member of the Chinese Communist Party Politburo Standing Committee, led a delegation to Pyongyang at the invitation of North Korea. He met with Jo Yong Won, a senior official of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea. The talks focused on implementing the agreement reached between President Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during Xi’s earlier visit to Pyongyang, and on expanding cooperation in public welfare, business, culture, and party relations.

The meeting coincided with the 65th anniversary of the China-North Korea friendship. Earlier in July, North Korean premier Pak Thae Song traveled to Beijing for talks with Xi Jinping, during which Xi urged the two allies to maintain “strategic resolve” and accelerate the implementation of the accords signed with Kim Jong Un. Wang’s visit therefore served to reaffirm the commitments made by the heads of state and to deepen strategic communication between the two parties.
