Security-camera footage captured a series of vehicle-rammed break-ins at Christchurch retailers in late June and early July 2024. The Halswell raid caused approximately $5,000 in property damage and forced the shop to open later than usual on a busy Friday. Canterbury courts sentenced 158 adults for retail theft in 2025—the highest figure since 2017—following 111 convictions in 2024, 130 in 2023, and 65 in 2022.
