Democratic Senate Strategy: JB Poersch’s View of the 2024 Midterm Map

In a recent interview, veteran Democratic Senate strategist JB Poersch—former executive director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (2006-2008) and current head of Senate Majority PAC—outlined the party’s path to retaining its Senate majority. He noted that early attention centered on Georgia, North Carolina, Maine and Michigan, but the campaign’s focus has shifted to four states that Donald Trump won by 13 points or more: Alaska, Iowa, Ohio and Texas. Poersch argues that these “toss-up” contests could be decisive because each features “uniquely, really good Democratic candidates.”

Poersch identified several Republican-leaning states where Democrats see potential breakthroughs: Florida, where former White House aide Alex Vindman has raised roughly $16 million; Mississippi, where the party is “excited about Scott Colom.” He also mentioned that the GOP’s attention to New Hampshire is misplaced, recalling former Sen. John Sununu’s decisive loss there two decades ago.

Beyond the primary battlegrounds, Poersch said the party is monitoring independent campaigns in Nebraska and Montana, describing them as “really, really good campaigns.” These independents, while not traditional Democratic nominees, could siphon enough votes to affect outcomes in states that otherwise lean heavily Republican.
