Wikipedia Confronts Political, Technological, and Governmental Pressures Under New Leadership

Wikipedia is facing a convergence of challenges that the Wikimedia Foundation describes as unprecedented in its 25-year history. Critics on the MAGA right, led publicly by Elon Musk, have accused the site of political bias and antisemitism while questioning its nonprofit status. Simultaneously, artificial-intelligence systems are increasingly drawing on Wikipedia’s 65 million articles, straining its resources and diverting attention. Repressive governments have detained volunteer editors, prompting concerns about harassment, surveillance, and retaliation.

In January, Bernadette Meehan became the chief executive of the Wikimedia Foundation, marking the first appointment of a leader with a background inside the organization. Meehan, 50, previously served as U.S. ambassador to Chile, held senior roles at the Obama Foundation, the State Department, the National Security Council, and worked on Wall Street. Her diplomatic experience includes negotiating nuclear agreements with Iran and facilitating talks with Cuba. Meehan has declined to characterize Wikipedia’s situation as a “war,” citing personal exposure to conflict during a 2007 deployment in Iraq.

To counter the mounting pressures, the foundation is expanding its lobbying budget and has launched advertising campaigns in Times Square. It has begun charging large technology firms—specifically Google and Meta—for extensive use of its content and is throttling access for certain data scrapers. Additionally, the organization is enlarging its human-rights team to better protect volunteers from harassment, surveillance, and retaliation.
