Unicode Unveils Nine Emoji Additions Planned for Spring 2027

Unicode’s emoji coordinator Jennifer Daniel previewed nine new or revised emoji that the Unicode Consortium intends to release in the spring of 2027. The set includes a distinct Meteor emoji, a Comet that will retain its icy-blue design, separate cucumber and pickle symbols, blue and orange butterflies, a Lighthouse, an Eraser, new left- and right-thumb gestures, a Cracked Smiling Face, and a net icon. While some entries are refinements of existing characters, several are entirely new.

Daniel explained that the emoji subcommittee is “doing some tidying up to help avoid misunderstandings,” prompting the split of the original comet illustration into two separate symbols. The older comet, once depicted as a red-hot rock, will now consistently appear as a “celestial blue ice streak,” while the new meteor will convey “cosmic finality” for dramatic contexts. Additional refinements, such as distinguishing cucumber from pickle and offering two butterfly colors, aim to give users clearer visual options.

In the preview, Daniel emphasized that the updates are meant to align emoji meaning with user intent. She noted that the Cracked Smiling Face captures the tension between a public façade and private distress, and that the Lighthouse serves as a “literal guiding light through the dark night of your soul.” The Eraser is positioned as a metaphor for “retroactive boundary-setting” rather than literal text deletion. These explanations reflect the committee’s broader effort to expand expressive nuance while maintaining consistency across platforms.
