Historical Context

After Britain announced its 1968 East-of-Suez withdrawal, Gulf rulers rushed to form a union, creating the United Arab Emirates on 2 December 1971. The next day Iran seized Abu Musa and the Greater and Lesser Tunbs, killing four Ras Al Khaimah policemen and displacing the 150 residents of Greater Tunb. Iran’s continued control fuels the UAE’s diplomatic push for mediation over the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
