Czech Businessman Detained in China Amid Reciprocal Spy Allegations

Chinese security forces detained a Czech businessman at an airport in China at the end of June, according to Czech news site Seznam Zprávy. The Czech Foreign Ministry confirmed the detention on 15 July, stating that consular officials were in contact with the individual but providing no further details. Chinese authorities announced on 16 July that the man is under investigation for “national security offences,” a term commonly used for espionage cases.

The detention follows the arrest in January of Yang Yiming, a reporter for a Chinese Communist Party-affiliated newspaper, who is awaiting trial in the Czech Republic on charges of “unauthorised activity for a foreign power.” Beijing has demanded his immediate release, describing the charges as “trumped-up.” In response, China’s foreign ministry said the rights of the detained Czech citizen are fully guaranteed and called for the release of its own citizen.
