Historical Context

After the 1991 Gulf War Iraq completed the 1,000-km Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline to bypass the Strait of Hormuz. The line has faced repeated sabotage—U.S. strikes in 2003, bombings in 2009 and 2013—prompting repairs by the state-run North Oil Company in August 2024 and a restart in September 2025. Its original capacity was about 160,000 barrels per day.
