MLB-Players’ Olympic Bid Stalled by Disputed Hotel, Ticket and Participation Terms

Major League Baseball (MLB) and the MLB Players Association (MLBPA) are at an impasse with the Los Angeles 2028 (LA28) organizing committee over the inclusion of MLB players in the 2028 Summer Olympics. Sources obtained by ESPN reveal that the dispute centers on three primary issues: allocation of hotel rooms for athletes and families, a “friends-and-family” ticket policy, and a mandatory-participation agreement that would place non-compliant players on the restricted list without pay or service time from July 12 to Aug. 3. MLB has offered 435 additional rooms beyond the 200 already earmarked for its players and the Japanese national team, while LA28’s memorandum of understanding (MOU) permits each athlete two tickets per game, with a possible right to purchase more. The league plans to pause regular-season play for 11 days, schedule an All-Star Game on July 11, and begin the six-team Olympic tournament at Dodger Stadium on July 13.
