Japan Bans Flag
- Japan’s Parliament passed a law on Friday banning desecration of the national flag.
- Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi promoted the legislation to boost patriotism and shift politics rightward, aligning Japan with France, Germany, Italy and India, which also penalize flag damage.
- The law makes damaging, removing or defacing the flag that provokes discomfort or disgust punishable by up to two years in prison or a fine of about $1,200 (200,000 yen).
