Ohio Democrats Face Transgender Rights Backlash Ahead of November Ballot

In May, Rep. Kaptur voted for the Republican-backed H.R. 2616 (“Stopping Indoctrination and Protecting Kids Act”), which would require schools to notify parents when a child seeks to change a gender-related name or pronoun and would withhold federal funding from schools that “teach or advance concepts related to gender identity.” Earlier, in June, Acton attended several Pride events but later issued a newspaper statement that she “doesn’t support boys playing in girls’ sports,” using the term “boys” to describe transgender girls. Both officials appear on Ohio ballots in November, and Democrats have linked the party’s broader electoral setbacks in 2024 to perceived compromises on transgender rights.

The party’s Pride Caucus posted on Facebook on July 2, reiterating that “trans girls are girls” and rejecting the notion of “boys” competing in girls’ sports.
