Historical Context

Ariane 5, designed by France’s CNES with ESA partners and built by ArianeGroup, lifted off from the Guiana Space Centre on 4 June 1996; the test flight self-destructed after 37 seconds because of Ariane 4 software. After service began in 1999, the launcher logged 82 consecutive successes from 2003-2017 and completed its final mission on 5 July 2023, leading to Ariane 6’s July 2024 debut.
