HBO Max’s “Stuart Fails To Save the Universe” — Casting Shifts and Unconventional Episode Lengths

In October 2024 Warner Bros. Television signed three original *Big Bang Theory* alums—Kevin Sussman, Brian Posehn and Lauren Lapkus—to star in a planned spinoff. The series, created by Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady and Zak Penn, was initially framed around Sussman’s comic-book-store owner Stuart Bloom, Posehn’s geologist Bert Kibbler and Lapkus’s character Denise. Four months later John Ross Bowie inked a talent deal to reprise Barry Kripke, reshaping the show into a four-lead comedy now titled Stuart Fails To Save the Universe.

Season 1 comprises ten episodes ranging from 15 to 25 minutes—significantly shorter than the typical 22-minute broadcast format. Lorre explained that the creators “just felt that we’d successfully told the story, and to add would be padding,” emphasizing that streaming removes the historic advertising-driven runtime constraints.

The creators stressed artistic freedom over traditional timing, noting that the historic episode length “is entirely arbitrary” and stems from network advertising needs no longer relevant to streaming platforms. Lorre described the episode-to-episode structure as a natural “teaser for the next week,” while Prady said the alternating-reality format emerged organically after the first episode’s surprise twist. Bowie expressed enthusiasm for his reimagined role, likening it to “the Dr. Smith from *Lost in Space*.”
