Custodial Death of S. Sabari Varman Prompts Arrests and Political Outcry in Nagercoil

On the early hours of Monday, July 13 2026, 35-year-old remand prisoner S. Sabari Varman was found unconscious in his cell at the Kanniyakumari district jail in Nagercoil. He was taken to Kanniyakumari Government Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. The post-mortem, conducted on July 14, identified 19 injuries, including abrasions and a fractured right metacarpal bone. Varman had been remanded on July 9 after being arrested for selling banned tobacco products.

Kanniyakumari district police classified the death as suspicious and opened a murder probe. Chief head warder N. Suresh (alias Thirumalainambi), warder N. Jehan, and warder J. Sibakumar were arrested on July 14 and charged under multiple sections of the BNS Act. The following day, eight fellow inmates—V. Vishnu (21), Sarathi (19), A. Jegan (40), J. Sarath (20), R. Veriya Perumal (36), G. Sethuram (30), A. Ajith (29) and R. Aravind (27)—were taken into custody and added as accused under section 103 of the BNS Act.

Deputy General Secretary of the DMK and Thoothukudi MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi visited Varman’s family on July 15, offering condolences and condemning the handling of the case. She asserted that the government must accept responsibility when errors occur.
