Historical Context

During the 1987-88 Iran-Iraq war, the U.S. Navy escorted re-flagged Kuwaiti tankers under Operation Earnest Will. After the guided-missile frigate USS Samuel B. Roberts hit an Iranian mine on 14 April 1988, the United States launched Operation Praying Mantis on 18 April 1988, destroying two Iranian oil platforms and sinking a frigate. The raid helped push Iran toward a cease-fire later that summer.
