Arizona Teen Honored for Saving Dementia Patient in Record Heat

In June, 14-year-old Royal Cothrun was riding his bicycle through the town of Gilbert when he saw 76-year-old Theresa Morgan struggling to walk in 103 °F (39.4 °C) heat while carrying a grocery bag and a purse. Cothrun slowed down, spoke with Morgan, and offered to look up nearby shelter on his phone. He guided her to shade, helped her recall her son’s telephone number, and called her son, Jeff Morgan. The teenager remained with Morgan until Gilbert’s fire and rescue department arrived and escorted her to safety.

The rescue occurred during a climate-crisis-driven heatwave that produced record temperatures across the United States from June through early July 2026. Officials reported that the extreme heat had contributed to at least two dozen deaths, underscoring the heightened risk of heat-related illness, especially for vulnerable individuals such as those with dementia who may become disoriented.

Gilbert’s fire and rescue department announced that it would honor Cothrun at an 11 August town-council meeting, describing his actions as “heroism … quick thinking and compassion.” Battalion chief Ryan McHugh said the incident “highlighted the real dangers posed by Arizona’s extreme heat” and urged the community to stay alert during the summer months.
