DJ Chris Cross Launches Terrific Tunes to Empower Independent Musicians

Memphis-born DJ Chris Cross, whose real name is Chris Marshall, has built Terrific Tunes into a distribution and creative-services company aimed at independent artists. The platform retains artists’ copyright ownership while handling upload, metadata, split-sheet registration, royalty tracking and editorial pitching. Terrific Tunes takes a flat 20 % of revenue, leaving 80 % to the creator for each release. The service is supported by a partnership with the technology platform Too Lost and is marketed as a “bridge between independent artists and the broader industry infrastructure.”

Marshall’s music education began with elementary-school piano lessons and a family link to Stax Records—his grandfather Randle Catron co-wrote “New Year’s Resolution,” recorded by Otis Redding and Carla Thomas in 1967. After a stint as a campus DJ at the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff, he toured with acts such as Moneybagg Yo, Rod Wave and Yo Gotti. Relocating to Atlanta, which he calls “the Music Hub of the South,” he observed how cultural timing and business acumen shape breakout hits. Those experiences formed an informal graduate program that taught him the mechanics of show logistics, record distribution and the pitfalls of insufficient infrastructure.

Marshall argues that many creators upload songs without planning for playlist pitching, clean metadata, publishing registration or an understanding of payout cycles. He warns that a lack of intellectual-property awareness leaves artists vulnerable to manipulation. By providing tools for rights management, data analytics and strategic release timing, Terrific Tunes seeks to help creators operate like businesses rather than merely “dropping music.” Marshall also notes that emerging technologies such as TikTok and artificial intelligence are reshaping discovery, urging artists to view AI as a tool rather than a threat.
