Historical Context

On 18 April 1988 the United States launched Operation Praying Mantis, a naval strike that sank two Iranian warships, destroyed two oil platforms and damaged the frigate Sahand after Iran mined the USS Samuel B. Roberts on 14 April. The retaliation helped push Iran toward a cease-fire in the Iran-Iraq War and set a precedent for today’s US-IRGC confrontations in the Strait of Hormuz.
