Kirsti Mukwiilongo fled Namibia at age 15 during the country’s liberation struggle, living as a refugee in Angola and Zambia before completing a degree in Australia. She later joined the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in Namibia and, in 2005, applied to become an international UN Volunteer. Building an Agricultural Cooperative in Sungui
Stationed in Sungui, Bengo province, Mukwiilongo found refugee women isolated near a lake, surviving on fishing and small-scale farming. Recognising their lack of land rights and banking access, she negotiated with authorities to secure farmland and arranged transport to the nearest town so women could open bank accounts for the first time. The cooperative expanded to produce maize, vegetables, fruit and fish, and later added a tailoring unit using donated manual sewing machines.
Connecting Livelihoods to Education
Mukwiilongo leveraged cooperative income to fund schooling. She authored a proposal that secured Shell funding to construct a primary school within the camp, while earnings allowed children to attend nearby Catholic hostels. The cooperative also supplied food to these schools, reinforcing the link between economic empowerment and learning.
Psychosocial Care and High-Profile Protection
Although not a trained psychologist, Mukwiilongo coordinated with UNICEF for referrals, providing counseling and documentation for women traumatized by violence. In 2007 she protected six Eritrean footballers who fled persecution during a match in Angola, arranging medical care and preventing forced repatriation.
Ongoing Leadership and Reflections
After five years, the cooperative remained active. Mukwiilongo now serves as National General Secretary of the Young Men’s Christian Association in Namibia, an organization she helped launch. She continues to champion refugee rights, urging others to volunteer: “once a volunteer, always a volunteer.”
