The June MOU, reportedly signed by U.S. President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, included a 60-day ceasefire, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and a timetable for a final agreement on Iran’s nuclear program. Hostilities escalated in late February after U.S.–Israeli strikes on Iranian targets, prompting Iran to attack commercial vessels in the Strait. The United States responded with a series of airstrikes, and the ceasefire fell apart. By early July, President Trump announced on Truth Social that “the Cease Fire is OVER!” and warned of “1,000 Missiles … locked and loaded.” Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) subsequently launched retaliatory attacks on Syria, Kuwait and Bahrain, while President Pezeshkian declared Iran was now in a “full-scale war” with the United States.
