Historical Context

After the Citizenship (Amendment) Act became law on 12 December 2019, protests erupted across Assam, Delhi and other states, with more than 200 students injured by police tear-gas at Jamia Millia Islamia and around a hundred detained. The crackdown sparked nationwide bans, internet shutdowns and 27 deaths by 27 December 2019, establishing a pattern of heavy police response that reappeared in later demonstrations.
