Skeletons Set for 2027 Theatrical Release

Sony Pictures announced on Monday that the creature-horror film Skeletons will open in theaters on June 4, 2027. The movie, directed by JT Mollner—who previously wrote and directed the indie thriller *Strange Darling* (August 2024)—was acquired by Sony earlier this year as a package in a competitive bidding war at the European Film Market. Production began last month, and the studio listed Brie Larson, Kyle Gallner, Daithí Ó Haragáin, Willa Fitzgerald, Ione Skye, John Goodman, and Keith Carradine as the principal cast. J.J. Abrams is attached as a producer.

*Skeletons* is based on author Philip Fracassi’s short story “Fail-Safe.” The narrative, which centers on a young boy’s relationship with his mother confined to a nightly cage, was first drafted for the screen by Brian Duffield. After the story struggled to find a publisher, it later appeared in a short-story collection and garnered critical praise. In 2022, Universal Pictures optioned the material, but the option expired in 2024. Sony then prevailed in a bidding war that also included Paramount, Warner Bros., and Neon to secure the rights.
