- On 21 July 1990 the Taiwan Garrison Command ordered the repatriation of 76 mainland Chinese illegal immigrants by locking them inside a boat’s sealed holds. The cramped conditions caused 25 of the detainees to suffocate and die. The incident sparked international criticism of Taiwan’s handling of migrant deportations.
