History

Historical Context

In 1982 Israel began a 22-year occupation of southern Lebanon, supporting the South Lebanon Army against Hezbollah until Prime Minister Ehud Barak ordered a unilateral pullout on 25 May 2000, later certified by the UN on 16 June. The 2000 UNIFIL-Lebanese security zone now underpins today’s U.S.–brokered pilot, which again requires Lebanese troops and Hezbollah weapon checks before any Israeli redeployment.
