BBC Introducing Stage Axed After 18 Years at Reading & Leeds Festival

Reading & Leeds Festival will run from August 27 to August 30 at Little John’s Farm in Reading and Bramham Park in Leeds. As part of the event’s largest staging overhaul in its 37-year history, the long-standing BBC Introducing stage—first launched in 2008—has been removed. Festival Republic, the festival’s organiser, will replace it with a new “Canopy” stage intended to showcase emerging talent.

The BBC Introducing stage has been a launchpad for numerous UK acts, most notably Ed Sheeran, The 1975, Florence + the Machine and Charli XCX, who all performed there before achieving mainstream success. Festival Republic says the overhaul adds up to six stages at each site, including upgrades to the Main Stage (now “The Grid”) and the addition of new venues such as The Gallery, The Warehouse and The Ballroom. While the BBC Introducing stage is being dropped at Reading, the broadcaster affirmed that “festivals across the UK would continue to host BBC Introducing stages this summer with line-ups including some fantastic up-and-coming artists.”
