Burnham Cuts VAT
  • Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced a cut to the 5% VAT on electricity bills from 1 October.
  • The cut should save household about £45 a year and trim inflation by 0.1 percentage points.
  • £850 million cost will be funded by cancelling the £1.8 billion Digital ID programme.
  • Former chief secretary Darren Jones and Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride called the cut unfunded and demanded a budget plan, while the End Fuel Poverty Coalition said it does not match hardship.
