Sean McCann to Represent Scotland at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games

Scottish Swimming announced that 21-year-old Sean McCann has been named to the Scottish swimming squad for the 2023 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. He will race in the freestyle events at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre during the 11-day competition. His twin sister, Amelie McCann, was also selected for the team. The announcement did not confirm whether their parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, will be present at the races.

Sean McCann began competitive sport at age eight, first joining the Charnwood Triathlon Club before moving to Loughborough Town swimming club to increase his weekly sessions. By ten, he was selected for the City of Leicester squad and subsequently earned multiple county titles, as well as regional and national championships in his age group. He competed for Scotland at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago, swimming the 400 m and 1500 m freestyle. McCann trains nine pool sessions and three gym workouts each week, totaling more than 20 hours of training, and has been rising at 4 a.m. for practice since age eleven.

The McCann siblings were two years old when their sister Madeleine was abducted on May 3, 2007, while the family was on holiday in Praia da Luz, Portugal. The case sparked an international manhunt; Madeleine remains missing and is presumed dead. The brothers’ emergence onto the international sporting stage occurs against this long-standing public attention to their family.

Sean McCann has stated that his participation in Glasgow is intended to help him qualify for Team GB and to secure a place at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. He also aims to compete at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Amelie McCann, who previously competed as a university-level triathlete with the Durham University Triathlon Club, is likewise targeting further international competition.
