Historical Context

In January 2020, after the U.S. drone strike that killed General Qasem Soleimani, Iran’s IRGC launched about 15 ballistic missiles at Iraq’s Al Asad Airbase, the largest missile attack on U.S. forces abroad. The July 2024 missile-drone strike on Jordan’s Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, killing two U.S. service members, repeats that retaliation pattern and has led the Pentagon to tighten force-protection and urge allied bases to upgrade air defenses.
