EU Commission Revokes Funding
- The Venice Biennale lost its €2 million EU Creative Europe grant on 21 July 2026 because the European Commission said Russia’s participation breached democratic-value conditions.
- Commission spokesman Thomas Regnier said EU-funded cultural events must protect democracy, diversity and free expression, which he claims Russia lacks.
- After the Biennale refused to bar the Russian pavilion, which reopened on 9 May, protests by Pussy Riot and FEMEN led organizers to move the awards ceremony to 22 November.
