Marathon Bungie Launches “Vault Breaker” Experimental PvE Mode

Vault Breaker PvE Mode Launched

Marathon Bungie released the Vault Breaker player-versus-environment (PvE) experimental mode, allowing solo players, duos or trios to tackle the Cryo map’s vaults. The mode replaces opposing teams with AI challenges and culminates in a fight against the Compiler, the same final boss from the standard Cryo extraction mode. Players begin with a dedicated kit, loot weapons and gear during the run, and extract only a currency that can upgrade Vault Breaker kits or purchase rotating store items usable across all game modes.

Context and Development

According to Paul Tassi, the mode arrives as Marathon’s first substantive PvE offering, intended to test whether reducing the high-intensity barrier of the core extraction experience can attract new or less-intense players. Prior attempts to grow the player base—such as making the game temporarily free—did not yield lasting increases, leading developers to view PvE as a “last card” in their strategy. Tassi emphasizes that Vault Breaker is an experimental, two-week trial rather than a permanent addition, and that a more comprehensive PvE experience is slated for season 3.

Features and Limitations

  • Group Size: 1-3 players per run.
  • Map: Cryo, utilizing existing puzzle mechanics.
  • Progression: Looted gear cannot be extracted; only a currency is extracted for kit upgrades or store purchases.
  • Duration: Two-week trial window, after which the mode may be unavailable.
  • Integration: Players still access Vendor and Cradle upgrades, and the mode has its own separate skill tree.

Tassi notes that because the mode is still early in development, it lacks the depth of a fully fleshed-out PvE system. Access requires ownership of the base game, though a future free weekend could broaden testing for skeptics.

Future Plans and Potential Impact

Marathon Bungie has announced a “real” PvE mode for season 3, promising a larger, freely accessible experience. The experimental Vault Breaker trial serves as a proof-of-concept; its reception will likely influence how the upcoming mode is shaped and whether PvE can meaningfully lower entry barriers for Marathon’s community.
