On July 21, firefighters were engaged in multiple blazes in Scotland, Spain, France and Canada. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) was battling a wildfire in the Glenmore area of the Cairngorms National Park and a grass fire on Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh. In Spain, a fire in Guadalajara province entered its fifth day, becoming the nation’s largest blaze of the year. France reported a rapidly spreading fire near Fréjus on the Mediterranean coast, prompting suspension of train service between Toulon and Les Arcs. In Ontario, Premier Doug Ford announced that the province was confronting 190 active blazes, with roughly 1,800 residents evacuated from remote northern communities.

Scale and Environmental Impact

The La Mierla fire in Spain had already consumed more than 26,000 hectares (?64,247 acres) and forced the evacuation of over 1,000 people. A heatwave, the third of 2026, was forecast to keep temperatures above 40 °C across southeastern Spain, with peaks of 42-44 °C expected by Thursday. In Canada, smoke from the Ontario fires produced the world’s worst air-quality reading in Toronto, which then drifted into the U.S. Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. While air quality later improved in southern Ontario and parts of the U.S., it remained poor in several Midwestern states.

Official Responses from Governments

Premier Doug Ford described the situation as “unacceptable” and criticized U.S. President Donald Trump for threatening tariffs instead of offering assistance. President Trump claimed he told Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney that Canada must improve its wildfire control, a statement made during the FIFA World Cup final. Carney has not directly responded, though he has emphasized that all nations, including the United States, need to do more to combat climate change. The SFRS and the Scottish Wildfire Forum extended a very high wildfire-risk warning through July 24.

Broader Climate Implications

Experts highlighted that wildfires release large quantities of black carbon, a pollutant linked to respiratory illness, cardiovascular disease and nearly half of global warming. Climate scientists attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of these fires to rising temperatures that dry timber and elevate fire risk. They argue that tighter regulation of super-pollutants and stronger early-warning systems are essential to break the cycle of fire-driven climate degradation.
