Avengers: Doomsday Generates $16.5 Million in First-Day Advance Ticket Sales

Marvel Studios reported that “Avengers: Doomsday” earned $16.5 million in advance ticket sales after the first day tickets were made available. The sales were limited to premium formats in roughly 1,000 domestic theaters, and the film will open the weekend of Dec. 18 on more than 4,000 North American screens. Premium-format showings for Thursday, Dec. 17 and Friday, Dec. 18 are largely sold out, prompting exhibitors to add additional screenings for Christmas Day and beyond. The movie will not be shown in IMAX because “Dune: Part III” holds the exclusive IMAX footprint for three weeks. Marvel introduced an “Infinity Vision” certification, which Disney says guarantees that participating theaters meet rigorous technical standards.

Variety notes that the $16.5 million first-day pre-sales are roughly double the advance figures for Marvel’s 2024 crossover “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which launched across all formats and screens. “Deadpool & Wolverine” ultimately grossed $211 million on opening and finished its run with $1.3 billion, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film ever. The last full-MCU ensemble, 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” recorded the largest opening weekend ever with $357 million domestically and $1.2 billion worldwide. The current report also cites that the film is the second-highest-grossing movie of all time with $2.7 billion, underscoring the high-revenue environment surrounding the Dec. 18 release.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, “Avengers: Doomsday” is the 39th MCU installment and features an extensive roster that includes Robert Downey Jr. (returning as Doctor Doom), Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Patrick Stewart, Pedro Pascal, Ian McKellen, Letitia Wright and Channing Tatum. The plot is described as a collision of heroes from three distinct universes facing an unprecedented existential threat.

Analysts anticipate that the simultaneous debut of “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Dune: Part III”—coined “Dunesday”—will generate one of the largest collective weekends in box-office history, potentially rivaling the combined openings of 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” ($402 million), 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War” ($314 million) and 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($313 million). Marvel’s slate continues with “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” scheduled for release on July 31. A sequel, “Avengers: Secret Wars,” is slated for 2027.
