A report released by the education watchdog Defending Education claims that the nation’s largest teacher unions and related education organizations are incorporating diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) language into guidance for artificial-intelligence (AI) tools used in schools. The report examines policy drafts, model guidelines and training materials from the National Education Association (NEA), the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and several other groups, asserting that the documents prioritize “equity” and “algorithmic bias” concerns.
Organizations and Initiatives Highlighted
The AFT, which represents more than 1.8 million educators, is noted for launching the National Academy for AI Instruction, a $23 million partnership with Microsoft, OpenAI and Anthropic intended to develop AI “guardrails” for teachers. State-level involvement includes the California Teachers Association’s (CTA) development of AI guidance that advises an “equity lens,” while the American Association of School Administrators, the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) are cited for urging transparency and bias audits from AI vendors.
Funding and Policy Proposals
According to the report, the AFT’s 2025 resolution acknowledges AI’s potential to personalize instruction and reduce administrative load, but warns that without safeguards it could perpetuate bias, invade privacy, and undermine educational equity and educators’ professional judgment. The report says the resolution frames “bias” and “equity” as central issues for AI deployment in schools.
Allegations of Ideological Influence
Defending Education’s investigative reporter Casey Ryan characterizes the unions as “left-wing political operations” using AI to advance a particular worldview. The report alleges that the groups aim to ensure students receive “politicized answers” and a “politicized education” through AI tools.
