Core Event

On July 22, 2026, Samsung displayed a prototype of its upcoming smart glasses at the Galaxy Unpacked event in London. The company presented the device as its first direct challenge to Meta in the consumer-focused AR eyewear market.

Background and Partnerships

The glasses were initially introduced in a limited form at Google I/O in May, where Samsung showcased two designs created with fashion partner Gentle Monster and eyewear retailer Warby Parker. At that time, Samsung provided few details about the product’s capabilities.

Features and Technical Specs

The prototype includes a built-in camera that can record the wearer’s view, capture whiteboard content, and convert long smartphone messages into spoken summaries through integrated speakers. Samsung says the device will rely on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon AR1 Gen1 processor and must remain tethered to a smartphone for full functionality. A portable charging case supplies power, and the company is testing gesture controls that could be triggered from its Galaxy smartwatch or the Galaxy Ring launched in 2024.

Official Statements and Launch Plans

James Choi, Samsung’s executive vice president and head of the R&D division behind the glasses, explained that Samsung is evaluating hand-gesture interactions with its smartwatches and that the Ring may also support such commands. Choi added that the product is slated to launch in the fall, with additional designs and color options beyond the prototypes shown at the event.

Market Implications

By entering the smart-glasses segment, Samsung aims to broaden competition with Meta, which currently dominates the space. Analysts note that Samsung’s integration of existing wearable ecosystems—smartwatch and Ring—could differentiate its offering, though the requirement to stay tethered to a phone may limit appeal compared with fully standalone competitors.
