A scientific analysis released in July 2026 finds that the extreme heat sweeping western and eastern Europe this summer has made drought conditions 80 times more likely in the west and 40 times more likely in the east than they would have been without the 1.4 °C of global warming. Soil dryness is now five times (west) to 11 times (east) more likely because of fossil-fuel-related pollution. The study, conducted by the World Weather Attribution (WWA) consortium, compared observed conditions from April to June with a counterfactual climate without anthropogenic warming.

How Climate Change Amplified Dryness

The analysis shows that record-breaking heatwaves have intensified atmospheric “thirst,” evaporating water from rivers, lakes, reservoirs and soils before summer even begins. The drought arrived two months earlier than the 2022 event, and the end-June heatwave was the worst on record for Europe, a scenario the WWA team says would have been impossible without the climate crisis.

Agricultural and Energy Impacts

The drying has already disrupted food and energy systems. About 9 million tonnes of grain are projected to be lost across Europe, with France facing its worst maize harvest in 50 years and Romanian farmers losing over a million hectares of crops. Rivers such as the Rhine at Lobith are below the low-water level of the 1976 summer, curtailing hydropower generation and limiting cargo ship navigation. A separate UK study estimates that lost working hours from the heat cost the economy more than £1 billion.
