San Diego Secures Comic-Con Through 2030 After Multi-Year Deal

City officials and Comic-Con International announced on Wednesday that the convention will remain in San Diego at least until 2030. The agreement follows a series of negotiations involving the mayor’s office, the San Diego Convention Center, and the San Diego Tourism Authority. Organizers had previously committed the event to the city through 2027, but the new pact extends that timeline by three additional years.

Since its inaugural preview night in 1970, San Diego Comic-Con has grown from a modest gathering into one of the world’s largest pop-culture conventions. Each year, speculation circulates about relocating the event to other markets due to concerns over hotel affordability and convention-center capacity. The latest extension reflects a long-standing partnership that has kept the convention anchored in the city for more than five decades.

The 2026 edition is projected to draw over 135,000 attendees across four days, generate more than $160 million in regional economic impact, and book roughly 61,000 hotel-room nights. City officials estimate $3 million in hotel and sales-tax revenue will flow to municipal services. The convention occupies more than 460,000 square feet of exhibit space, hosts over 1,000 exhibitors, and offers upwards of 2,000 hours of programming, workshops, and special events covering comics, film, television, gaming, publishing, and the arts.

Comic-Con’s chief communications and strategy officer David Glanzer expressed excitement about the extended stay and thanked the city and hotels for providing competitive room blocks. Convention Center President and CEO Mardeen Mattix highlighted the convention’s role in supporting thousands of jobs and funding essential city services through tax revenue. San Diego Police Department Deputy Chief Shawn Takeuchi underscored the department’s readiness, adding that additional personnel will be deployed to ensure public safety throughout the weekend.
