France’s Historic Heat Wave Triggers Record Excess Deaths

Public Health France reported that the regions exposed to the June 17 – July 2 heat wave experienced 21,674 deaths from all causes. Statistical modeling based on previous years projected only 15,910 deaths, leaving an excess of 5,764 fatalities—an increase of 36% over the expected baseline. The agency said this is the highest excess-mortality figure for any French heat wave since the 2003 event, which claimed roughly 15,000 lives.

The heat wave peaked with the nation’s hottest-ever days on June 24 and June 25, when the national average reached 30 °C (86 °F) and nighttime temperatures set new records. Peak temperatures in many locations rose well above 40 °C (104 °F). Over half of the excess deaths occurred during the three-day span from June 25 to June 27, the period identified by the agency as the most lethal phase of the event.

Nearly 50% of the unexpected deaths took place in hospitals, which faced surges of patients suffering heat-related ailments. About one-third occurred at home, while the remaining fatalities were largely concentrated in care homes for older adults. In the Paris region alone, the agency recorded 1,999 excess deaths—approximately an 80% rise compared with a non-heat-wave scenario.

Health experts caution that the full impact of extreme heat is often under-reported. They note that conditions such as heart attacks, which can be triggered by high temperatures, may appear on death certificates without reference to heat exposure, meaning the official toll could be higher than current estimates.
