Masaki and Kristina McLellan of Bergen County, New Jersey, applied for their daughter Maya’s account on July 6. The family later learned the transfer could take up to four weeks. Kristina expressed disappointment with the delay, noting that Maya already has a 529 college-savings plan and a custodial brokerage account.
Official Praise and Political Context
The rollout coincides with Republican pressure ahead of the midterm elections; a June AP-NORC survey found only 33 % of U.S. adults approve of Trump’s economic leadership. Trump is scheduled to speak at a Georgia high school to promote the program.
Criticism and Concerns
Critics contend the accounts do little to aid families during a child’s earliest, most vulnerable years. They also note that the One Big Beautiful Bill, which created the program, simultaneously reduced funding for Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program—key safety-net programs for children.
