CIER Set to Raise Taiwan’s 2026 Growth Forecast to 10.35% on AI-Driven Export Surge

Forecast Upgrade Announcement

The Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research (CIER) is slated to announce on July 22 that it will lift its 2026 gross domestic product (GDP) growth projection for Taiwan to 10.35 percent. The revision follows stronger-than-expected exports tied to artificial-intelligence (AI) demand and resilient domestic consumption. CIER also expects the consumer-price index (CPI) to rise to 2.02 percent this year, just above the central bank’s 2 percent target.

Context and Prior Projections

CIER’s new estimate marks a sharp jump from its earlier forecasts of 4.14 percent in January and 7.22 percent in April. It joins Academia Sinica, which recently raised its own outlook to 10.16 percent. The institute attributes the acceleration to “double-digit” growth in AI-related exports during the first half of the year, bolstered by high-performance computing and advanced semiconductor manufacturing.

Key Economic Indicators

  • External demand: projected to add 5.62 percentage points to GDP growth.
  • Domestic demand: projected to contribute 4.73 percentage points.
  • Export outlook: Lien Hsien-ming, CIER president, said exports could surpass US$900 billion, a roughly 50 percent increase from the prior year.
  • Inflation: CPI forecast of 2.02 percent for 2026, easing to 1.89 percent in 2027.
  • Currency: the New Taiwan dollar is expected to average NT$31.5 per U.S. dollar.

Official Reactions

At a June 1 news conference, CIER president Lien Hsien-ming emphasized that “exports remain *extremely, extremely robust*.” Independent director Chu Jung of Taiwan Finance Corp., who sits on CIER’s forecasting panel, projected growth between 9.64 percent and 10.2 percent under neutral-to-optimistic scenarios. Statistics chief Tsai Yu-tai of the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics noted that price rises in memory chips and computers have been partly passed to consumers, but these items represent only 1.6 percent of the CPI basket, limiting overall inflationary impact.
