Historical Context

In October 1988 Bathory released Blood Fire Death, the first album to blend black metal with Viking themes and launch the subgenre. After founder Quorthon’s death in 2004, tribute shows and a 2024 project commemorating the 20th anniversary kept his influence alive. Amon Amarth’s 2026 album still directly echoes the genre’s modern Viking-metal blueprint.
