Travis Vokolek Retires After Neck Injury Sustained on Special Teams

Arizona Cardinals tight end Travis Vokolek announced his retirement from the NFL via an Instagram post on Wednesday night. He explained that multiple consultations with doctors and neurologists led to the recommendation that he medically retire because of a serious neck injury suffered during the previous season.

The injury occurred on a kickoff return in a game against the Indianapolis Colts last October. Video replay showed Vokolek being pushed by Colts linebacker Segun Olubi before collapsing awkwardly. He was immobilized on a stretcher, with both arms strapped, and taken off the field on a cart. The injury sidelined him for the remainder of the season; he had appeared in four of Arizona’s first five games, primarily as a third-string tight end and special-teams contributor.

Vokolek entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Baltimore Ravens in 2023. He joined the Cardinals’ active roster in December of that year and spent the 2024 season as a depth player on the tight-end group.
