On the Saturday preceding July 23, an insurgent ambush struck a Malian military convoy between the town of Anefis and the city of Gao in northern Mali. According to statements from Mali’s armed forces, the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) and the al-Qaeda-linked Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM), the attackers captured a number of soldiers who had surrendered. JNIM later posted video that appeared to show the surrendered troops with their hands behind their heads while some were shot by the rebels. The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights said the reported torture and killing of dozens of surrendering soldiers could constitute a war crime and urged a thorough, independent investigation.
Context of Mali’s Conflict
The incident follows a wave of coordinated attacks by JNIM and the FLA in April that killed Mali’s defence minister, struck the national airport, and forced the army to abandon several positions. The groups attempted to seize Anefis on July 4, but the military retained control of the town. Mali’s military-led government, which came to power after coups in 2020 and 2021, has pledged to improve security amid escalating insurgent activity across the Sahel.
Numbers and Evidence
A source close to the FLA reported that more than 50 pro-government fighters were killed in the ambush. The UN spokesperson, Thameen Al-Kheetan, described the circulating footage as “horrendous” and called for verification of its authenticity. FLA spokesperson Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane said the group supports independent investigations of all human-rights abuses in the region and emphasized that the video must first be authenticated.
International Response
The UN human-rights office publicly deplored the alleged torture and killing, labeling the acts as potential war crimes and demanding an impartial inquiry. JNIM declined to comment when approached for a statement. The call for investigation underscores growing international concern over the escalation of violence and the need for accountability in Mali’s protracted conflict.
