International Distribution Deal

Sony Pictures has agreed to serve as the worldwide distributor for “Ramayana,” a two-part Indian mythological film directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Prime Focus Studios. The agreement covers every market outside India, while domestic distribution will be handled by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. The film is slated for a November release timed with the Diwali holiday period.

Production Scope and Creative Team

“Ramayana” retells the classic tale of Prince Rama, his wife Sita, and the demon king Ravana. The cast includes Ranbir Kapoor as Rama, Yash as Ravana, and Sai Pallavi as Sita. The score is a collaboration between Oscar-winning composers Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman. Action sequences are choreographed by Terry Notary and Guy Norris, and production design is overseen by Ramsey Avery and Ravi Bansal. Visual effects are provided by DNEG, the eight-time Academy Award-winning VFX house known for work on the “Dune” trilogy, “Blade Runner 2049,” “Interstellar,” “Inception,” and “The Odyssey.”

Official Statements

Prime Focus Studios founder Namit Malhotra explained that the project aims to honor the centuries-old narrative while delivering a cinematic experience that resonates with global audiences. He highlighted the partnership with Sony Pictures as a means to bring the epic to moviegoers worldwide.

Financial and Industry Context

Prime Focus Studios previously co-produced “The Garfield Movie” with Alcon Entertainment for Sony Pictures, a title that earned more than $257 million worldwide. The studio is currently developing additional projects, including the live-action/animation hybrid “Animal Friends” with Legendary Entertainment and Ryan Reynolds’ Maximum Effort, as well as “The Angry Birds Movie 3” for Paramount Pictures.

Release Outlook

The November launch positions “Ramayana” to capitalize on the Diwali holiday, a peak period for Indian cinema releases. The film will be offered in multiple languages, including an English version, to maximize its appeal across diverse international markets.
