Colombia Extends Néstor Lorenzo’s Coaching Contract

Argentina-born Néstor Lorenzo, 60, was hired by the Colombian Football Federation in 2022 on a four-year deal. Under his leadership the national team has compiled 31 wins, 12 draws and eight losses, scoring 96 goals while conceding 44. At the most recent World Cup, Colombia kept a single goal out of five matches, topping its group with victories over Uzbekistan (3-1) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (1-0) and a 0-0 draw with Portugal. The side advanced past Ghana 1-0 in the round of 32 before exiting in the last-16 on penalties to Switzerland after a goalless 120 minutes.

The federation’s executive committee met in Bogotá and announced that Lorenzo’s contract has been extended, though the new term’s length was not disclosed. The decision follows the team’s strong defensive showing and the desire to “recharge and continue developing” the project, as expressed by the coach. Colombia’s next competitive window opens in September, with an opponent yet to be confirmed.
