Neuroscientist Alan Pearce, Adjunct Professor at Swinburne University of Technology, explains that CTE is a neurodegenerative disease linked to repetitive head impacts, even when athletes show no obvious symptoms. He notes that CTE has been diagnosed in a range of populations—including elite athletes, military personnel, and victims of domestic violence—who experience hundreds or thousands of minor hits to the head. Pearce argues that public discussion often over-emphasizes concussion protocols while overlooking this broader, less visible risk.

Simple Modifications Over High-Tech Solutions

Pearce advocates a “low-tech, unsexy” strategy: reducing exposure to repetitive impacts through rule changes and practice adjustments, especially for children and adolescents. Rather than relying on expensive technology or banning contact sports outright, he suggests modifying training drills, limiting the number of head-impact repetitions, and redesigning certain game situations to lower cumulative risk. He emphasizes that such changes are feasible and can be implemented without sacrificing the essence of the sport.

Implications for Youth and Training

Implementing these modifications could protect developing brains, where tissue is particularly delicate. By curbing repetitive sub-concussive hits, leagues may reduce the long-term incidence of CTE and related neurodegeneration. Pearce warns that continuing to accept “harder” training as a badge of authenticity risks normalizing preventable brain injury. A shift toward safer practice standards offers a pragmatic path to preserving both athlete health and the integrity of contact sports.
