La La Land Marks Its Tenth Anniversary with a Live Concert at Venice

The 83rd Venice International Film Festival will host “La La Land in Concert” as part of the Cartier Cinema Club program. The live-music presentation will be staged at the historic Teatro La Fenice, pairing a screening of Damien Chazelle’s 2016 musical with a performance of its score. The event is organized in partnership with Lionsgate and Hurwitz Concerts, and admission is free to the public.

Composer Justin Hurwitz will conduct the Orchestra Regionale Filarmonia Veneta, joined by pianist Randy Kerber—both of whom contributed to the original soundtrack. Hurwitz has described the opportunity to lead the orchestra in Venice, where the film premiered a decade ago, as a “dream come true.” The concert will feature the full soundtrack performed live while the film runs on screen, highlighting the award-winning music that helped the movie secure 14 Oscar nominations and six wins, including Best Original Score and Best Original Song.

Damien Chazelle, the Oscar-winning director of the film, is confirmed to attend the Venice showing. Lionsgate, the film’s distributor, is coordinating the anniversary celebration and will re-release the movie in theaters in mid-August. The Maison Cartier, a sponsor of the festival’s cultural initiatives, continues its support for the Fondazione Teatro la Fenice’s season of opera, ballet, and concerts.

In addition to the Venice event, the “La La Land in Concert” tour will conclude at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles in early August, marking the final stop of Hurwitz’s sold-out itinerary. Tickets for the Venice concert become available on the theater’s website in early August, and the Los Angeles performance is slated for the first week of the month. Lionsgate also plans a stage-play adaptation of the film for Broadway, produced by Marc Platt of “Wicked” fame.
